Bird Automaton

This mechanical bird automaton is completely 3D printed and requires no assembly. Rotation of the crank is transformed into vertical motion by a scotch yoke mechanism which in turn makes the body of the bird go up and down. At the same time, links are connected to each of the wings, resulting in a lifelike movement.

​Hyperbola Automaton

This model illustrates a property of hyperbola and twisted cylinders. A tilted rod revolved around an axis will create the contour of a hyperbola. It is completely 3d printed in one part and requires no assembly.

Hinged Dissections

Introduction
A hinged dissection is a sort of geometric dissection where the individual parts are hinged together amd rearrangement of the parts can change the appearance of the object.

Design Algorithm
The following hinged dissections are generated by simplifying two target shapes into pixelated enitities and figuring out a way to transform between them. The design process can be described by the  following steps:
  1. Pixelate two or more target shapes.
  2. Make sure the shapes are of the same area.
  3. Overlay the target shapes and select the largest common area as a fixed piece.
  4. Divide extremities into right angled equilateral triangles. This prevents self-locking.
  5. Hinge the pieces so that they reach the target shapes. Simplify if possible.
